AKG K72: Build Your Monitoring Setup

AKG K72 pairs 40mm drivers with a lightweight closed-back design for home recording, monitoring and everyday music. Its 32-ohm impedance and standard jack connections make it easy to include in a small desktop or recording setup.

The K72 combines a self-adjusting headband, replaceable ear pads and a 3m single-sided cable. The understated black finish and 16Hz–20kHz rated response make the K72 a straightforward starting point for monitoring.

Explore the Features

FEATURE 01

40mm Drivers for Monitoring

The 40mm drivers are designed to reproduce the range of instruments and voices in a mix. Listen to familiar recordings first so you know how bass, vocals and bright percussion translate through your setup.

FEATURE 02

Closed Earcups Near Microphones

The closed design helps reduce headphone sound reaching an open microphone. Keep playback at a sensible level and check a short recording for spill before tracking a full performance.

FEATURE 03

32 Ohms for Everyday Sources

The low-impedance design works with a broad range of headphone outputs. Devices without a headphone socket need a compatible audio adapter; the right connector does not guarantee identical output from every device.

FEATURE 04

Self-Adjusting Headband

The suspended headband adapts as you put the headphone on. This is useful when moving between listening positions or sharing a studio headphone between performers.

FEATURE 05

Lightweight Over-Ear Fit

At 200g, the headphone keeps the assembly light while the pads sit around the ears. Comfortable monitoring makes it easier to work at a consistent level instead of constantly readjusting the fit.

FEATURE 06

Replaceable Ear Pads

Pads can be replaced as they wear. Their condition affects comfort and how the earcups seal, so they are worth checking during routine studio maintenance.

FEATURE 07

A 3m Cable for the Studio

The fixed cable exits from one side and gives you room to move around a desk or instrument. Route the extra length carefully so it stays clear of pedals, stands and chair wheels.

FEATURE 08

Two Common Jack Sizes

The 3.5mm plug connects to compact headphone outputs, while the supplied screw-on 6.3mm adapter fits many interfaces and mixers. Fit the adapter firmly before inserting it into equipment.

FEATURE 09

Simple, Durable Construction

The K72 combines metal structural elements with serviceable ear pads. Its straightforward wired design avoids a battery or wireless pairing routine when you need to begin a session.

Set Up a Clean Monitor Feed

Connect to the headphone output of your interface, mixer or player. Begin with the level turned down and raise it gradually. These headphones reproduce the monitor signal; they do not record your voice.

For microphone work, set a comfortable balance between your voice and backing track. Closed earcups reduce spill but do not guarantee a completely silent microphone feed.

Compare and Complete Your Setup

Compare AKG K92 for another closed-back option, or AKG K612 PRO for open-back listening in a quiet room.

For XLR recording, pair a compatible microphone such as AKG P420 with an interface such as Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen. Connect the headphone to the interface’s headphone output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AKG K72 open-back or closed-back?

It is a closed-back, over-ear headphone designed for monitoring and listening.

Does it include a microphone?

No. It is a stereo headphone without a built-in voice microphone.

Is the cable detachable?

No. It has a fixed 3m single-sided cable.

Do I need an amplifier?

Not necessarily. The 32-ohm design works with many normal headphone outputs. A compatible adapter is needed if your device lacks a headphone socket.

Are the ear pads replaceable?

Yes. The pads can be replaced when they wear.

Can it stop all sound leakage?

No. The closed design helps reduce leakage, but playback level, pad fit and microphone placement still matter.

What is included?

The headphone and a screw-on 3.5mm-to-6.3mm adapter are included.
