AUDIO-TECHNICA FAQ

Before you buy.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about Audio-Technica headphones and microphones.

Which ATH-M series headphones should I choose?

The ATH-M series covers closed-back studio monitoring, from the ATH-M20x and ATH-M30x up to the ATH-M40x and ATH-M50x. The M40x is known for a flatter, more neutral sound for mixing and editing, while the M50x adds a little more low-end energy and is a popular all-rounder for recording, streaming and everyday listening.

Closed-back or open-back: which Audio-Technica headphones fit my use?

Closed-back models like the ATH-M50x and ATH-M40x isolate sound, which suits recording, streaming and noisy rooms. Open-back models like the ATH-R30x and ATH-AD900X sound more spacious and natural for mixing and long listening sessions, but they leak sound and let room noise in.

Do Audio-Technica studio headphones need a headphone amp?

Most ATH-M series models, including the ATH-M50x and ATH-M40x, are easy to drive and work well from a laptop, audio interface or mixer. A dedicated headphone amp or DAC can still add headroom and cleaner output, especially with open-back reference models.

What do I need to use the AT2050 microphone?

The AT2050 is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with an XLR connection, so it needs an audio interface or mixer that supplies 48V phantom power. A shock mount, pop filter and a stable boom arm or stand help you get clean vocal recordings.
