How to choose an audio interface or mixer
- Inputs: one XLR input covers a single mic. Two or more let you add a guest mic, a guitar or a stereo source.
- Interface or mixer: an audio interface, often called a USB sound card, records clean audio for music and podcasts. A streaming mixer like the GoXLR adds faders, voice effects and separate game, chat and music channels.
- Gain and phantom power: condenser mics need 48V phantom power, and low-output dynamic mics like the Shure SM7B need plenty of clean gain.
- Mac or PC: the GoXLR and GoXLR Mini are made for Windows PCs. On a Mac, choose an interface like the Focusrite Scarlett or Audient EVO 4.

Do I need an audio interface or a streaming mixer?
An audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or Audient EVO 4 connects XLR mics and studio headphones to your computer with clean sound. A streaming mixer like the GoXLR or GoXLR Mini adds physical faders and voice effects, and separates game, chat and music for streams.
One input or two?
A one-input interface such as the RØDE AI-1 covers a single microphone. Two-input models like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen take two microphones, a mic and an instrument, or a stereo source, with 48V phantom power.
Will it work with a Shure SM7B?
The SM7B needs a lot of clean gain, so many entry interfaces work better with an inline booster like a Cloudlifter. The Shure SM7dB has that preamp built in and works with a standard interface.
Does the GoXLR work on Mac?
The GoXLR and GoXLR Mini are made for Windows PCs. On a Mac, choose an interface like the Focusrite Scarlett or Audient EVO 4.
What is phantom power?
Phantom power (48V) is a voltage the interface sends down the XLR cable to power condenser microphones and active mics like the SM7dB. Dynamic mics like the RODE PodMic and Shure SM7B do not need it.
