Smart plug or smart wall switch: which should I choose?
A smart plug like the TP-LINK TAPO Smart Plug needs no installation: plug it into a socket and control whatever is connected from your phone. A smart wall switch replaces your existing switch to control ceiling lights and needs proper wiring.
Do smart wall switches need a neutral wire?
Many Wi-Fi wall switches need a neutral wire in the switch box to stay powered, so check your wiring before buying. Installation involves mains electricity, so have a qualified electrician fit it if you are not sure.
What can I control with a smart plug?
Smart plugs suit devices with a simple on and off switch, such as lamps, fans, LED strips and chargers. You can set schedules and timers from the app, but avoid high-power appliances like heaters unless the plug's rating clearly covers them.
Do smart plugs and switches work with voice assistants?
