How to choose a DAC, amp or preamp
- DAC, amp or both: A DAC converts digital audio from your computer or phone into an analogue signal, and an amp drives your headphones. A combo does both in one box, while a stack lets you upgrade each part on its own.
- Headphone load: High-impedance or low-sensitivity studio headphones often sound quiet from a laptop or motherboard output and benefit from a dedicated amp. Efficient earphones and gaming headsets rarely need one.
- Connections: Check that the DAC accepts the output your source has, usually USB, and that its headphone output matches your cable’s plug.
- Mic gain: Low-output dynamic mics need a lot of gain. An inline activator adds clean gain before your interface, so its preamps can run lower with less hiss.

AMPS, DACS AND PREAMPS FAQ
Before you buy.
Straight answers to the questions we hear most about DACs, headphone amps and mic preamps.
What is the difference between a DAC and a headphone amp?
A DAC converts digital audio from your PC or phone into an analog signal, while an amp boosts that signal to drive your headphones. Combo units like the iFi Audio ZEN DAC 3 do both in one box, while a stack such as the JDS LABS ATOM DAC 2 and ATOM AMP 2 splits the jobs.
Do I need an amp for my headphones?
High-impedance or low-sensitivity headphones, such as 250-ohm studio models, often sound quiet or thin from a laptop or motherboard output and benefit from an amp. Most efficient gaming headsets and earphones run fine without one, though a clean DAC can still reduce hiss and interference.
What does a mic activator like the Cloudlifter CL-1 do?
Low-output dynamic mics, such as many broadcast microphones, need a lot of gain. The Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-1 adds up to 25dB of clean gain before your interface, so its preamps can run lower with less hiss. It needs 48V phantom power from your interface or mixer to work.
Can I use a DAC and amp for gaming as well as music?
Yes, any DAC and amp works for both. Gaming-focused units can add virtual surround and a mic input for headset users, while desktop units like the iFi Audio ZEN DAC 3 or a JDS LABS ATOM stack focus on clean stereo playback for headphones.
