How to choose microphone accessories
- Plosives: A pop filter or foam windscreen softens the bursts of air from P and B sounds before they reach the capsule.
- Fit: Accessories made for a specific mic, such as the Shure SM7 series, RØDE PodMic or Elgato Wave, give the cleanest fit, so check the model name before you buy.
- Room sound: An isolation shield behind the mic reduces the echo it picks up in bare rooms. Speaking closer to the mic helps too.

Pop filter or foam windscreen: which do I need?
Both reduce the bursts of air from P and B sounds. A foam windscreen such as the SHURE RK345 for SM7 models fits over the microphone itself, while a pop filter like the Elgato Wave Pop Filter attaches in front of it. Mic-specific options, such as the On-Stage pop blocker for the RODE PodMic, give the cleanest fit.
What does a shock mount do?
A shock mount suspends the microphone on elastic or rubber mounts, so desk bumps, typing and boom arm movement do not reach the recording as low thumps. Universal mounts are sized by mic diameter, while the Elgato Wave Shock Mount is made for Wave microphones.
Do I need an extension rod for my mic stand?
An extension rod lifts the microphone higher on its stand, so it sits closer to your mouth without you leaning in. The Elgato Wave Extension Rod, for example, is made for the Wave mic stand.
Is an isolation shield useful in an untreated room?
An isolation shield wraps behind the mic to reduce the echo and reflections it picks up. It helps in bare rooms, and placing the mic close to your mouth and adding soft furnishings or acoustic panels makes a clear difference too.
