Smart plug or smart wall switch: which should I choose?
A smart plug like the TP-LINK TAPO Smart Plug needs no installation: plug it into a socket and control whatever is connected from your phone. A smart wall switch, such as the SONOFF Smart WiFi Touch Wall Light Switch, replaces your existing switch to control ceiling lights and needs proper wiring.
Do smart wall switches need a neutral wire?
Many Wi-Fi wall switches need a neutral wire in the switch box to stay powered, so check your wiring before buying. Installation involves mains electricity, so have a qualified electrician fit it if you are not sure.
What can I control with a smart plug?
Smart plugs suit devices with a simple on and off switch, such as lamps, fans, LED strips and chargers. You can set schedules and timers from the app, but avoid high-power appliances like heaters unless the plug's rating clearly covers them.
Do smart plugs and switches work with voice assistants?
TP-LINK TAPO plugs work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant once linked in the Tapo app. SONOFF switches are set up in the eWeLink app and can also be linked to Alexa and Google Assistant. Both connect over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi without a separate hub.
