FOCUSRITE FAQ

Before you buy.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about Focusrite Scarlett audio interfaces.

Scarlett Solo or Scarlett 2i2: which interface do I need?

The Scarlett Solo has one microphone input and one instrument input, ideal for a single voice or a voice plus guitar. The Scarlett 2i2 has two combo inputs that each take a microphone or instrument, so it suits two-person podcasts, stereo recording or two mics at the same time.

3rd Gen or 4th Gen Scarlett: what changed?

The 4th Gen Scarlett Solo and 2i2 bring updated preamps with more gain, which helps low-output dynamic microphones, and a higher dynamic range, rated at 120dB on the 2i2 4th Gen. The 2i2 4th Gen also adds Auto Gain and Clip Safe to help set recording levels.

What comes in a Scarlett Studio bundle?

The Scarlett Solo Studio and 2i2 Studio 4th Gen bundles pair the interface with a condenser microphone, closed-back headphones and an XLR cable, so you have a complete recording kit out of the box.

When do I need the Scarlett 4i4?

The Scarlett 4i4 adds extra line inputs and outputs plus MIDI, which helps if you connect synths or external gear, or want separate headphone and speaker mixes. For a single voice or a simple two-input setup, the Solo or 2i2 is usually enough.
