TOSLINK Optical Connectors
The cable connects equipment fitted with the standard TOSLINK optical socket. Check labels such as OPT OUT, OPT IN or optical S/PDIF to identify the source and receiving-device roles. A coaxial RCA S/PDIF socket uses a different physical connection, so the S/PDIF label alone does not identify an optical port.
Digital Audio Carried by Light
TOSLINK transmits the audio signal optically through the cable rather than through an analogue copper audio path. This avoids a conductive audio-ground connection between the two optical sockets. It does not convert an analogue output or supply the digital-to-analogue conversion required by headphones or an analogue amplifier input.
A 1.5 m Route Between Components
The one-and-a-half-metre length provides a defined path between nearby audio and video equipment. Allow room behind both devices and route the cable with gentle curves. Avoid crushing the optical lead or folding it sharply when arranging furniture, a television stand or the rear of an audio shelf.
Match the Digital Audio Format
The source output format must be supported by the receiving device. Select a compatible optical format in the television, computer or player settings, then choose the optical input on the DAC, receiver or soundbar. The cable transports the selected signal; it does not decode unsupported audio formats for the receiving equipment.
Prepare the Optical Connection
Remove any protective connector caps before inserting the plugs, check their orientation and seat them carefully in the optical sockets. Keep the optical connector ends clean and avoid forcing a plug into a different socket. Replace the protective caps when storing a disconnected cable if they are available.
