The available 1 TB / 2 TB capacity options let you choose the drive around the space needed for the system. Plan room for the operating system, applications, game updates and working files when choosing the drive. Some of the labelled capacity is used for formatting and drive functions, so usable space depends on the operating environment. Keep a separate backup arrangement for files that need to be retained.

Sequential Transfer Performance

Sequential read: 7000 MB/s. Sequential write: 1 TB: 5300 MB/s; 2 TB: 5100 MB/s. These are manufacturer maximum figures under the specified test conditions. Actual transfers depend on the host hardware, software, available cache, temperature and workload. Use the capacity-specific figures when comparing this drive with another option, particularly where a larger version of the same family has a different write rating.

Match the Storage Interface

The drive uses PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe in a M.2 2280 NVMe format. Check that the intended M.2 slot accepts a 2280-length PCIe NVMe drive and supports the required interface. The host connection determines the available link speed, so confirm the system specification before planning an upgrade.

The WD_BLACK SN850 Hardware

The original SN850 is a PCIe Gen 4 NVMe drive family with capacity-specific performance ratings. Supported manufacturer Dashboard software on Windows provides drive-health monitoring and gaming-mode controls. Select the capacity around the installed library and use the matching performance values rather than the later SN850X specifications. These characteristics describe the selected drive family and capacity. Use them alongside the interface and performance figures when choosing storage for a desktop or compatible notebook. Keep any service or firmware work within the manufacturer’s supported procedure and maintain a backup of important files before changing a storage installation.

Capacity-Specific Write Endurance

The rated write endurance is 1 TB: 600 TBW; 2 TB: 1200 TBW. TBW means terabytes written and describes a tested write-workload rating. It is not the same as usable capacity or a guaranteed number of years of operation. Consider the expected write workload when choosing a drive for application files, game installations, recordings or project data.
