WD FAQ
Before you buy.
Straight answers to the questions we hear most about WD_BLACK SSDs and hard drives.
SN8100, SN850X or SN7100: which WD_BLACK SSD should I choose?
The SN8100 is a PCIe Gen 5 drive for the newest platforms and the fastest transfers. The SN850X is a proven PCIe Gen 4 drive for gaming PCs, and the SN7100 is an efficient NVMe option for everyday gaming builds and laptops.
Will a Gen 5 SSD work in a Gen 4 motherboard?
Yes. PCIe NVMe drives are backward compatible, so a Gen 5 drive like the SN8100 works in a Gen 4 M.2 slot at Gen 4 speeds. To get its full speed you need a motherboard and CPU with a PCIe Gen 5 M.2 slot.
Should I choose an NVMe SSD or the WD Black hard drive?
An NVMe SSD like the SN850X loads games and your system far faster and is the right choice for your main drive. The WD Black 2TB hard drive suits extra storage for media, backups and game libraries you do not play often.
Which capacity should I choose: 1TB or 2TB?
1TB covers your system and a handful of large games. Since many modern games take a lot of space, 2TB, offered on the SN850X and SN8100, gives room for a bigger library without constant uninstalling.
