Audio-Technica Headphone Guide: Choose M-Series or R-Series
This Audio-Technica headphone guide compares M-Series and R-Series choices by isolation, listening environment, cable and source requirements at AX Kuwait.
The brand behind the model names
Audio-Technica was founded by Hideo Matsushita in 1962, beginning with analogue audio products before expanding into microphones and headphones. Its catalogue now includes equipment for professional monitoring, recording and personal listening.
For a buyer, the important consequence is variety. Audio-Technica does not make one universal studio headphone in several prices. A closed-back M-Series model and an open-back reference model solve different problems, even if both carry a professional description. Choose the design that suits your room before comparing a list of technical numbers.
Map the AX range before narrowing the choice
| Range | Models to identify | Where to start the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Closed-back M-Series | M20x, M30x, M40x, M50x | Recording, monitoring and situations where leakage matters |
| Open-back R-Series | R30x, R50x, R70xa | Quiet listening, editing and reference work |
| Earlier open-air models | AD700X and AD900X | Compare their own fit and specifications, not those of the R-Series |
These are catalogue examples, not a statement that every option is currently in stock. Follow the linked AX listing for the exact product and available configuration.

M-Series specifications that change the purchase
| Wired model | Driver / nominal impedance | Cable arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| ATH-M20x | 40mm / 47Ω | Fixed 3m |
| ATH-M30x | 40mm / 47Ω | Fixed 3m |
| ATH-M40x | 40mm / 35Ω | Detachable; straight and coiled cables |
| ATH-M50x | 45mm / 38Ω | Detachable; three supplied cables |
These figures come from Audio-Technica’s official M-Series leaflet. They describe hardware differences rather than a sound-quality ranking. R-Series models are a separate open-back comparison: R30x is 36Ω, R50x is 50Ω and R70xa is 470Ω. Read sensitivity and source requirements alongside impedance.
M20x and M30x: check the essentials first
For an entry-level monitoring purchase, ask whether the headphone will be used for speaking into a microphone, practising, editing or general listening. Check fit, isolation, cable routing and the source connector. Those everyday details can matter more than a small change in a printed frequency range.
The M20x and M30x belong to the closed-back M-Series, but should still be compared using their own documentation. Confirm whether the cable arrangement suits a fixed desk, a bag or a shared recording space, and whether the package includes the adapter your source needs.

M40x and M50x: compare features, not a quality ladder
The M40x and M50x offer detachable-cable arrangements in the documented M-Series range. The M50x uses a different driver specification from the M40x; that does not make driver diameter a direct measure of which one you will prefer.
Look at supplied cable types, earcup movement, physical fit and the sound balance you want. If you edit voice for long periods, comfort and consistency may matter more than a foldable design. If you move between recording positions, cable choice and serviceability can become more important.
R30x, R50x and R70xa: choose the quiet-room path
The newer R range is aimed at open-back reference use. Open construction lets outside sound in and playback out. It is therefore a different shortlist from a closed M-Series headphone for tracking beside an active microphone.
The R70xa is a lightweight high-impedance reference model, but the R-Series should not be treated as three identical shells with progressively larger numbers. Compare the exact source requirements, fit, cable arrangement and intended work. For a direct two-model purchase decision, see ATH-R70xa versus HD 660S2.
Understand the suffixes before comparing prices
R70x and R70xa are separate generations. An M50x wired headphone is not automatically the same product as a Bluetooth variant or a StreamSet model with a microphone. Colour names and special editions also need their actual package checked rather than assumed.
Keep the complete model name when asking for a recommendation. A price difference between a standalone headphone and a headset-style package may reflect a different product, not a discount on identical contents.
Match the headphone to the source and microphone plan
Some listeners can use their intended source directly; others need an appropriate headphone output or amplifier. Check impedance, sensitivity and source capability together. Do not assume every Audio-Technica headphone is equally easy to drive.
For voice chat or streaming, the headphones in the main M and R lists still need a separate microphone. If you choose an audio interface for that microphone, assess its headphone output before adding a separate DAC/amp. Avoid building two overlapping playback chains without a clear purpose.
An AX buying checklist for Kuwait
- Room: quiet personal listening or recording with isolation needs?
- Use: tracking, editing, gaming, music or a mixture?
- Model: full name, generation and wired / wireless variant?
- Source: exact computer, interface or amplifier?
- Ownership: cable, adapters, fit and replacement pads?
Start with the design and practical fit, then choose a model within it. AX product pages provide the actual configuration and current availability; manufacturer references below explain the product families without relying on an unverified claim that one headphone is best for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Is M50x always better than M40x?
Not for every listener or task. Compare cable package, fit, design and preferred sound rather than treating the model number as a universal ranking.
Are R-Series headphones suitable beside a recording microphone?
They are open-back designs. If playback leakage is important, begin with an appropriate closed-back option.
Is ATH-R70xa the same as ATH-R70x?
No. Use the current R70xa documentation for that model and avoid transferring older specifications without checking.
Do I need an amplifier for every Audio-Technica headphone?
No. The answer depends on the exact headphone and source. Use electrical specifications and practical listening needs together.
