STUDIO HEADPHONES AT AX

Hear the mix as it really is.

beyerdynamic DT 770, DT 900 and DT 990 PRO, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, AKG and Sennheiser: closed-back for tracking and streaming, open-back for mixing and critical listening.

Closed-back isolates for tracking and streaming; open-back gives a wider, more accurate picture for mixing. Low-impedance versions run from a laptop or interface, 250-ohm versions want a headphone amp.

HEADPHONE FAQ

Before you buy.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about studio headphones.

Open-back or closed-back headphones?

Closed-back models like the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO and Audio-Technica ATH-M50x keep sound in and noise out, good for recording, streaming and shared rooms. Open-back models like the DT 990 PRO, ATH-R30x and AKG K712 PRO sound wider and more natural for mixing and long listening, but leak sound.

Which impedance should I choose: 30, 48, 80 or 250 ohm?

Low impedance versions, such as the 30 ohm DT 1990 PRO MKII or 48 ohm DT 770 PRO X, play loud straight from a laptop, phone or controller. 250 ohm versions need an audio interface or headphone amplifier with enough power, and 80 ohm sits in between.

Can I use studio headphones for gaming?

Yes. Open-back studio headphones give a wide, accurate soundstage that many players like for hearing footsteps. Pair them with a separate microphone for voice chat.

What is the difference between the DT 770 PRO and DT 770 PRO X?

The classic DT 770 PRO is the long-running studio standard and comes in higher impedance versions. The PRO X is the newer 48 ohm version with a detachable cable that runs easily from any interface or laptop.

Do I need a headphone amplifier?

Only for high impedance or demanding headphones, like 250 ohm models or the 300 ohm Sennheiser HD 660S2, if your source sounds quiet. Most audio interfaces drive 80 ohm and below without trouble.
