Choose a workspace for the session
The colour touchscreen opens dedicated Field, Music and Podcast applications. Field mode prioritises multichannel capture, Music mode supports recording and overdubbing, and Podcast mode adds sound-pad playback for conversations and shows.
Connect microphones and instruments
Four XLR inputs have independent gain controls and pad switches. Two additional XLR/TRS combo inputs include Hi-Z switching for direct guitar or bass recording. The included XYH-6 capsule adds stereo ambience or an interview recording without external microphones.
Understand the twelve-track count
The standard hardware captures eight input channels: six external inputs plus the stereo capsule. Field mode can record up to twelve tracks by also saving the stereo backup and L/R mix. Music mode supports up to eight tracks, while Podcast WAV recording supports up to ten tracks. These are not twelve built-in XLR sockets.
Take the session to your computer
Use USB multitrack mode for up to 12 inputs and two outputs, or a stereo mode for a simpler connection. The recorder supports up to 24-bit/96 kHz in Field mode; Music and Podcast modes record WAV at up to 48 kHz. Four AA batteries, USB bus power or an optional adapter keep it running.
Expand the workflow when needed
Compatible optional capsules change the microphone arrangement or add inputs. The optional BTA-1 adapter enables supported remote-control functions. Headphones, microphones, cables and expansion accessories shown in setup photos are sold separately.

Keep the Exact Model and Signal Path Clear
The standard H8 has six external inputs plus a stereo XY capsule for eight physical channels. The Field-mode twelve-track count includes stereo backup and L/R mix files, not twelve built-in XLR inputs.

Match the actual input, output, cable wiring and power requirements across the recording or listening chain. Use the microphone and interface power settings appropriate to the actual source. USB microphone audio and XLR microphone inputs are separate routes. Headphones connect to a suitable monitoring output; optional computer controls do not act as a recorder’s dedicated remote. Compare each alternative’s format, ports, gain, included accessories and physical arrangement before choosing.
