ZOOM FAQ

Before you buy.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about Zoom portable and multitrack recorders.

H4essential, H6 or H8: which Zoom portable recorder fits my work?

The H4essential is a compact 4-track recorder for solo voice, interviews and simple field recording. The H6 offers six inputs for small podcasts and bands, and the H8, with eight inputs and 12 tracks, suits larger podcasts and multi-mic shoots.

Can a Zoom recorder work as a USB audio interface?

Yes. These Zoom recorders connect to a computer by USB and can work as an audio interface, so you can record straight into your software or stream with the same mics. The R12 is built around its USB-C interface for studio use at a desk.

What is the Zoom R12 for, compared with the H series?

The R12 MultiTrak is a desktop 8-track recorder for building songs track by track, with a touchscreen for editing on the unit. The H series recorders are handheld and made for capturing podcasts, interviews and live sound on the go.

Which microphones work with the Zoom H6 and H8?

Their combo inputs take XLR microphones and line-level gear, so both dynamic and condenser mics work, with phantom power for condensers. Both also accept swappable mic capsules on top, such as stereo or shotgun capsules, for quick recording without extra mics.
