Original P4 Recording Format
USB Stereo Interface

Four microphones, four listening levels
Each XLR input provides up to 70 dB of gain and switchable 48V phantom power. Four headphone sockets have individual volume controls, so every participant can hear the programme comfortably. The sockets share the programme mix; their volume controls do not create four separate mixes.
Include a remote guest
Connect a compatible phone using a four-contact TRRS cable, or bring in computer playback over USB. The phone connection uses channel 3 and USB return uses channel 4 in place of those microphone inputs. Mix-minus keeps the guest's own signal out of the return feed to reduce echo.
Record the conversation and the parts
Save a stereo programme file alongside individual channel files for later editing. Four sound pads trigger assigned music, jingles or pre-recorded clips. The original P4 records WAV at 16-bit/44.1 kHz, so choose that format in your editing workflow.
Take the podcast outside the studio
Run the P4 on two AA batteries or USB power. In USB audio-interface mode it sends a stereo mix, providing two input and two output channels rather than four isolated microphone feeds to the computer. Microphones, headphones, memory card and connection cables are separate purchases.
Keep the Exact Model and Signal Path Clear
Original PodTrak P4 records at 16-bit/44.1 kHz. Phone return replaces microphone channel 3 and USB return replaces channel 4. USB interface operation is stereo 2-in/2-out, not four separate microphone feeds to the computer.

Choose the Connected Equipment for Its Actual Role
Match the product’s stated input and output connections to the source and destination. Keep microphone preamps, digital converters and headphone amplifiers in their appropriate roles, checking cable wiring and power requirements before completing the recording or listening chain.

Match the actual input, output, cable wiring and power requirements across the recording or listening chain. Use the microphone and interface power settings appropriate to the actual source. USB microphone audio and XLR microphone inputs are separate routes. Headphones connect to a suitable monitoring output; optional computer controls do not act as a recorder’s dedicated remote. Compare each alternative’s format, ports, gain, included accessories and physical arrangement before choosing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which signal path and version should I plan for?

What should I check for portable power?
2 × AA alkaline, NiMH or lithium. Optional AD-17, 5 V / 1 A. Check the recording format, phantom power, monitoring and conditions when planning runtime.
Can 32-bit float prevent every overload?
This model’s stated recording formats apply to its exact generation. Set the analogue input level and gain according to the recorder instructions rather than assuming features from a newer essential model.
Are the four headphone outputs four separate mixes?
They share the programme mix, with individual listening volume controls. The separate controls do not create four independently routed monitor mixes.
