Layer a song one performance at a time

The R12 records two input tracks simultaneously and plays back up to eight tracks. Capture a vocal and instrument, then overdub the next part while listening to earlier takes. Input 1 includes Hi-Z for direct guitar or bass recording, and both inputs can supply 48V phantom power.

Edit and mix on the recorder

Use the 2.4-inch touchscreen to work with audio regions and the physical faders to balance tracks. Each track has pan and three-band EQ, while input dynamics and insert or send effects help shape the recording. A dedicated effects-return fader controls the send-effect level.

Develop the arrangement

Start with one of 150 rhythm loops, add the metronome, or use the onboard FM synth sounds. A compatible USB MIDI keyboard can play the synth, while touchscreen programming supports ideas without a keyboard. Import audio from a memory card or USB storage to build on existing material.

Connect to the rest of your studio

Balanced monitor outputs and a 3.5 mm headphone socket provide listening options. USB-C enables audio-interface use, file transfer and DAW control-surface operation. Recording runs at 44.1 kHz with 16-bit or 24-bit WAV files; this is an eight-playback-track recorder, not an eight-microphone-input mixer.

Record wherever ideas happen

Use four AA batteries, a suitable USB power source or the included AD-17 adapter. The R12 supports microSDXC cards up to 1TB. Instruments, microphones, headphones and memory cards shown in setup photos are sold separately.

Build Tracks with the Actual Input Count

Record up to two inputs at once and build an arrangement with up to eight playback tracks. Eight playback tracks do not mean eight simultaneous microphone inputs. Record successive performances to create the arrangement, using the touchscreen and track controls to edit and mix rather than planning eight live microphone connections at the same time.

Check the number of analogue recording channels, microphone preamps, digital expansion, MIDI, mobile support and supplied accessories when comparing interfaces. An Audio-Technica AT2020 XLR microphone requires 48 V phantom power; a Shure SM58 is a separate dynamic microphone choice. Use the correct XLR cable and microphone input. Beyerdynamic and Audio-Technica headphones provide listening alternatives, and Elgato controls complement a supported computer workflow. iD14 MKII desktop and ADAT functions do not include iD4 MKII’s supported iOS use. Mobile setups may require an adapter and external power. Choose the actual cables and recording software for the selected host.
