INTEL FAQ

Before you buy.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about Intel desktop processors.

Core i9-14900K or Core Ultra 9 285K: which Intel platform should I choose?

The 14th Gen Core i9-14900K and i9-14900KS use the LGA 1700 socket, shared with 12th and 13th Gen, and run on 600 or 700 series motherboards with a current BIOS. The Core Ultra 9 285K uses the newer LGA 1851 socket and needs an 800 series board, so choose the platform first, then the motherboard.

What do the K, F and KS letters mean on Intel processors?

K models such as the i5-14600K are unlocked for overclocking. F models like the i5-11400F and Core Ultra 5 225F have no integrated graphics, so they need a dedicated graphics card. KS chips, like the i9-14900KS, are special edition parts with higher factory boost clocks.

Should I pair my Intel processor with DDR4 or DDR5 memory?

12th to 14th Gen chips, such as the i7-14700K and i9-14900K, support DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the motherboard, while Core Ultra 200 series chips like the Core Ultra 9 285K use DDR5 only. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, so buy memory that matches your motherboard.

Do I need a liquid cooler for a Core i9 or Core Ultra 9?

High-end unlocked chips such as the i9-14900K and Core Ultra 9 285K draw a lot of power under load, so a 240mm or 360mm liquid cooler or a large dual-tower air cooler is the safer choice. K-series Intel processors do not include a stock cooler, so plan for one in your build.
