UNIVERSAL AUDIO FAQ

Before you buy.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about Universal Audio interfaces and microphones.

Volt 1, 2, 4, 176 or 276: which Universal Audio interface do I need?

The Volt 1 and Volt 176 have one mic input for solo voice or streaming, the Volt 2 and Volt 276 have two inputs for a guest or an instrument, and the Volt 4 adds more outputs for monitors and extra gear. Choose by how many mics and instruments you record at once.

What is the difference between the Volt 2 and the Volt 276?

Both have two inputs, but the Volt 276 adds a built-in analog compressor inspired by the classic 1176, which evens out your voice or instrument as you record. The Volt 2 keeps a simpler layout for clean, straightforward recording.

What does Vintage mode do on Volt interfaces?

Vintage mode adds the character of a classic UA tube preamp to the mic input, giving vocals and instruments a warmer, fuller tone. You can switch it on per channel or leave it off for a cleaner sound.

Does the UA SD-1 microphone need an audio interface?

Yes. The SD-1 is an XLR dynamic cardioid microphone, so it connects to an audio interface such as a Volt or to a mixer. Dynamic mics focus on your voice and pick up less room noise, which suits podcasts, streaming and vocals in untreated rooms.
