Switchable pad
Phantom-power requirement
Choose the pickup pattern for the session
Use cardioid to prioritise a source in front of the microphone, omnidirectional for sound from around the capsule, or figure-of-eight for pickup from the front and rear.
Handle louder sources with the pad
The switchable -20dB pad raises the rated maximum sound pressure level to 155dB. A selectable 300Hz bass-cut filter reduces low-frequency content when the recording calls for it.
Connect to your recording chain
The balanced 3-pin XLR output connects to a compatible microphone preamp or audio interface. The P420 requires 44-52V phantom power; it is not a USB microphone.
Studio accessories included
A spider shock mount helps reduce mechanically transmitted vibration. The included metal carrying case keeps the microphone and accessories organised between sessions. Use familiar recordings and a consistent listening level when assessing sound with your usual audio equipment.
Build the Correct XLR Signal Path
The microphone uses Balanced 3-pin male XLR. Connect it through an appropriate XLR microphone cable to a microphone preamp, interface or mixer, then set input gain around the actual performance. A headphone output is a playback connection and does not replace a microphone input.
Provide the Specified Phantom Power
The published phantom-power requirement is 44–52V. Use an appropriate powered microphone input and an XLR cable wired for that signal path. Keep the recording level below clipping, and check the input and power settings before starting the performance or recording session.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which microphone connection does this use?
Balanced 3-pin male XLR. Use a suitable XLR microphone input and cable. This listing is the analogue XLR model.
Which pickup pattern is available?
Cardioid; Omnidirectional; Figure-of-eight. Choose the microphone position and, where available, pattern around the source and room.
What equipment should I connect it to?
Use a microphone preamp, audio interface or mixer with the appropriate XLR microphone input. It must provide the specified phantom power: 44–52V.
What is included?
P420 microphone; Spider shock mount; Metal carrying case. Any interface, stand, arm or cable is a separate choice unless expressly listed as included.
How heavy is the microphone?
517g. Include the weight of the mounting accessories when choosing the supporting arm or stand.
How do I set the recording level?
Connect to the microphone input, position the microphone and check the loudest expected part of the performance. Adjust gain while monitoring so normal variations in voice or instrument level do not clip the input.
When is the 155 dB maximum SPL figure applicable?
The specified 155 dB maximum is with the −20 dB pad engaged. Keep that condition with the figure rather than applying it to every pad setting.
