Headphone Impedance and Sensitivity: the essentials

Headphone Impedance and Sensitivity work together when matching an amplifier; an ohm figure alone cannot tell you the complete driving requirement.

Why ohms alone do not settle the question

A 300-ohm headphone is not automatically better than a 48-ohm model. Impedance affects how the headphone interacts with its source, but it is not a ranking of detail, comfort or sound quality. Two headphones with the same impedance can need different input levels to reach a similar loudness.

Sensitivity supplies the missing context. Manufacturers may express it as decibels per milliwatt or decibels per volt. Those are different reference conditions. Comparing the printed numbers without their units can lead to the wrong conclusion.

Read real specifications carefully

Headphone example Published electrical / physical fact What it means for your shortlist
Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa 470 ohms; 97 dB/mW Check voltage capability and sensitivity together
Sennheiser HD 660S2 300 ohms; 104 dB at 1 Vrms Do not compare its sensitivity number directly with dB/mW
beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X 48-ohm model Lower impedance does not eliminate the need to check the source

These figures identify different loads and reference units. They do not establish which headphone sounds best, and they do not prove an audible advantage for a particular amplifier.

Match the amplifier specification to the load

Look for an amplifier output specification at an impedance close to the headphone you intend to use. A large power number measured into a low-impedance load is not the same as its available output into a much higher-impedance headphone.

For higher-impedance models, voltage capability can become the limiting factor. For some lower-impedance, less-sensitive headphones, current capability also matters. A useful manufacturer specification therefore states the load and measurement conditions rather than quoting one headline wattage.

Atom Amp 2 publishes output figures at several loads. That is the type of information to compare with your headphone requirements, rather than treating one maximum figure as universal.

Start with the source you already own

Connect the headphones to the intended source, begin at a low listening level and use familiar material. Assess whether ordinary listening is comfortably loud, quiet passages remain usable and louder passages stay clean. Do not turn up excessively simply to test the amplifier.

If you use equalisation that reduces the overall preamp level, the available headroom may change. A source that is adequate without a large EQ cut may leave less adjustment range after one. Distinguish that situation from a cable fault, wrong output or app volume setting.

When a separate amp is a sensible purchase

  • Your source cannot reach your normal comfortable listening level cleanly.
  • You need an accessible volume control or a specific input arrangement.
  • Your current output has audible noise or another confirmed problem.
  • You want an amplifier whose published capability suits future headphones as well.

Begin on low gain. Move to a higher gain only if the needed listening level is unavailable, as recommended in the JDS Labs operating instructions. High gain is not a sound-quality mode.

Avoid these common buying mistakes

Do not assume balanced output is mandatory for high impedance. Do not assume all laptop outputs are equally weak: Apple documents adaptive high-impedance support on compatible Macs. Equally, do not generalise that feature to every computer or every model year.

Bring the exact source model, headphone model and connector details when asking AX for help. That gives us a meaningful compatibility question instead of a guess based on the ohm number alone.

Frequently asked questions

Are 470-ohm headphones impossible to use without a desktop amp?

No universal rule follows from impedance alone. Check sensitivity, the source output and the level you need. A compatible capable source may already be sufficient.

Can I compare 97 dB/mW with 104 dB/V directly?

No. They use different electrical reference units. Compare equivalent measurements or ask for help interpreting them.

Does more gain mean more maximum power?

Gain changes how input level maps to output level. It does not by itself increase the amplifier power supply or guarantee more clean output.
