Pick the chip, then the platform.
Intel Core and AMD Ryzen desktop CPUs, including the X3D chips gamers ask for, with the motherboards and coolers to match on the same order.
X3D Ryzen chips lead in games; high-core-count Intel and Ryzen parts win in editing and rendering. The CPU fixes the socket, which fixes the motherboard and memory type, so choose the platform together.

PROCESSORS FAQ
Before you buy.
Straight answers to the questions we hear most about desktop processors.
Intel or AMD: which processor should I choose for gaming?
Both make strong gaming chips. AMD X3D processors such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D use extra stacked 3D V-Cache, which gives them a clear lead in many games. Intel chips like the Core i9-14900K and Core Ultra 9 285K have many cores and suit gaming combined with heavy editing or rendering.
What do the X3D, K and F letters mean?
X3D on AMD Ryzen chips means extra stacked cache that helps gaming performance. On Intel, K means the processor is unlocked for overclocking, as on the Core i5-14600K, and F means it has no integrated graphics, as on the Core Ultra 5 225F, so it needs a dedicated graphics card.
How many cores do I need?
For gaming, 6 to 8 fast cores are plenty, as on the Ryzen 5 7600 or Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Streaming, video editing and 3D rendering use more cores, where 16-core chips like the Ryzen 9 9950X3D or 24-core Intel chips like the Core i9-14900K pull ahead.
Which motherboard and cooler do I need for my processor?
Match the socket: Intel 14th Gen chips use LGA 1700, Intel Core Ultra desktop chips like the Core Ultra 9 285K use LGA 1851, and AMD Ryzen 7000 and 9000 chips use AM5. Most unlocked K and X processors ship without a cooler, so plan a capable air cooler or AIO liquid cooler.
