SM7dB vs SM7B: the essentials

SM7dB vs SM7B centres on the built-in preamp: choose the microphone with the interface, gain and connection plan you intend to use.

One microphone design, one key addition

The Shure SM7B is one of the best-known broadcast microphones in podcasting, streaming and radio. The Shure SM7dB keeps the same dynamic cardioid design, the familiar look and the same bass roll-off and presence boost switches, then adds a built-in preamp with +18 dB or +28 dB of gain and a bypass mode.

That single addition answers the most common SM7B problem: the microphone is quiet, and many compact audio interfaces struggle to give it enough clean gain.

Why the SM7B needs so much gain

At -59 dBV/Pa, the SM7B produces a low signal level. On an interface with modest preamps you may need to turn the gain close to maximum, which can bring up hiss and still leave your voice quieter than other creators.

There are three ways to solve it: an interface or mixer with strong, quiet preamps, an inline booster such as the Cloudlifter CL-1, or a microphone that carries its own preamp. The SM7dB is the third option in one box.

When the SM7dB makes sense

Choose the SM7dB if you are pairing it with an entry or compact interface, or if you simply want fewer boxes and cables on the desk. Turn on +48V phantom power on your interface, start with the +18 dB setting and only move to +28 dB if you still need more level.

If you later upgrade to a high-gain mixer, switch the SM7dB to bypass and it behaves like a standard SM7B. You do not lose anything by having the preamp built in. Planning a streaming desk around a mixer? Our GoXLR vs GoXLR Mini guide covers that side of the setup.

When the SM7B is still the right pick

The SM7B remains a strong choice if you already own a mixer or interface with plenty of clean gain. The RØDECaster Duo and Pro II offer 76 dB of gain from their Revolution Preamps. It is also the natural pick if you already own an inline booster.

In those setups the built-in preamp adds little, so the classic SM7B usually gives you the same result for less.

Get the best sound from either version

  • Stay close: both are designed for close speech. Keep a consistent distance of a few fingers from the windscreen.
  • Use the switches: bass roll-off reduces low rumble from desks and air conditioning; presence boost adds clarity in the upper mid range.
  • Use a sturdy arm: the SM7dB weighs 837 g, so choose a boom arm rated for heavy microphones, such as the RØDE PSA1+.
  • Keep the windscreen: it reduces plosives and breath noise. A replacement Shure RK345 windscreen fits SM7 models.

Frequently asked questions

Will phantom power damage an SM7B?

No. Dynamic microphones like the SM7B are not harmed by phantom power on a balanced XLR connection in normal use. The SM7B simply does not need it.

Can I use the SM7dB without phantom power?

Only in bypass mode. The built-in preamp needs +48V phantom power to run.

Does the SM7dB sound different from the SM7B?

Shure designed the SM7dB to keep the SM7B character. The preamp adds level, not a different tone.
